JORGE HUMBERTO (JOH)

Jorge Humberto (JOH) is a Portuguese artist born in Lisbon in 1960, with more than forty years of artistic activity. Trained in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon and in Drawing at the National Society of Fine Arts, his work spans painting, sculpture, and public art. His pieces can be found in both private and public collections, as well as in several public spaces across Portugal and abroad.

His artistic practice is marked by an intense engagement with materiality and texture. Using pigments and oils applied in fine lines or layers, JOH creates surfaces that blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture. His compositions evoke time, memory, and transformation, inviting the viewer to experience painting as both surface and object.

In his own words, his painting “is like a verb, active and performative — a process that emphasizes the presence of textures and their expressive capacities.” It is, as he defines it, “twilight and longing,” the work of a “painter of Time,” seeking not abstraction but concreteness through the “poetry of materials.”
